Losing weight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can sometimes seem impossible. From making sure you’re getting the right nutrition to incorporating exercise to making sure your mental health is in check, can drain most people of any kind of motivation. Here are some tips to keep yourself motivated through your weight loss journey.
- Determine Why You Want to Lose Weight
Figure our why you want to lose weight. Whether it be health, looks, family members, etc. Whatever the reason may be, write them down. Keep them in a spot you can see frequently throughout the day as a constant reminder as to why you’re doing what you’re doing.
- Make Your Goals Realistic
Quick weight loss solutions allow you to have rapid weight loss, but most of those diets flush out water weight and lean body mass before they get rid of body fat. These diets are not recommended for the long term. It is recommended to lose 1-2 pounds per week to maintain a healthy decrease in weight.
Luckily even a loss of 5% of your total body weight can have major benefits. Including, improving blood sugar control, reduce the risk of heart disease, lower cholesterol levels, reduce joint pain, and reduce the risk of certain cancers.
- Focus On Smaller, Process Goals
Making smaller and smarter short term goals will increase motivation with smaller successes leading up to your total goal.
Some Examples Are:
I will go to the gym 5 times this week
I will eat four servings of vegetable every day this week.
I will drink my daily serving of water each day this week.
- Keep a Weight Loss Journal
Writing down your food intake and exercise routine daily will help you stay on track. This will keep you accountable for everything you’ve done. The most important rule to this is to be completely honest about your choices because you’re the only person keeping yourself accountable
- Celebrate Your Success
Losing weight is hard and should be celebrated. It is, however, to make sure you reward yourself appropriately. Do not reward yourself with food. Make the rewards small but things you wouldn’t normally purchase.
Go to a movie
Get a manicure or pedicure
Buy a new outfit
- Find Social Support
I find myself turning to social media for support. I can post my progress on Instagram on Facebook and can feed off the support of my friends and family.
- Forgive Yourself
Do not deprive yourself of the little joys of life. For example, on Friday don’t deprive yourself of pizza night instead make sure you put a little more effort into being healthy throughout the day and indulge that night. The “all or nothing” technique can backfire and lead to an increased risk for binging.
At the end of the day, losing weight is hard and you should celebrate each victory no matter how small.
